Homeless man killed after being hit by a car in central Laredo

A homeless man identified by police authorities as 43-year-old Daniel Mata was killed when he was struck by a car on Monday, December 30 in a central Laredo, Texas neighborhood. According to the police, Mata was hit by a red 2000 Ford driven by 59-year-old Guadalupe Paz, who was heading east on the 500 block of Lafayette, Texas.

Mata was declared dead at around 4:05 p.m. in a San Antonio hospital two days after being hit, police spokesman Officer Alberto Escobedo said.

Mata is the second person to die in an auto-pedestrian accident during the holiday season in Texas.

An initial investigation revealed that Mata was not crossing the pedestrian lanes when the accident occurred.
