Obama seeks to limit gun possession for certain disability recipients

The Obama administration is advocating to ban certain Social Security disability beneficiaries from owning guns–especially those whose affairs are managed by other people, according to the Seattle Times on July 19.

This move is a step towards bringing the Social Security Administration up to speed with reporting regulations to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, a system designed to prevent the sale of guns and other firearms to felons, people convicted of drug crimes, and people who have been in the country illegally, among others.

According to SSA data, about 4.2 million adults who are receiving Social Security benefits are people who are unable to manage their own affairs due to the nature of their disabilities.
