Off-duty police officer killed in head-on collision

A six year police officer veteran was killed in a car accident while off-duty, according to the San Antonio Express-News on July 10.

The two-vehicle head-on collision happened on Borgfeld Drive near Bulverde Road in north Bexar County at around 11:30 a.m. 41-year-old Paul Rios was killed, while his two children were hospitalized with injuries.

According to preliminary investigations, Rios had been heading east along the highway with his two children in an SUV when his vehicle was struck from the front by a westbound Ford F-250.

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office spokesman James Keith said Rios was declared dead at the scene of the car accident, while his two children were taken by helicopter to University Hospital to treat their serious injuries. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Although the driver of the pickup truck said he was alone in the vehicle, witnesses said they saw people get out of the truck and run in the wake of the accident.
