Nathan Luke Nichols, 23, was sentenced to two 16-year terms and given a fine of $25,000 for each of the two lives he claimed in a Jan. 2013 head-on collision.
According to District Attorney Michael Burns, Nichols’ actions had been affected by the breakup he had with his girlfriend the day of the accident. Nichols had been in Stephenville, Texas when his girlfriend broke up with him over the phone; he subsequently drove to her house in Santo, Texas.
Nichols drove his Mustang east on Farm to Market Road 2201 toward Highway 281 at around 5:20 p.m. He then ended up in the wrong lane and collided with a truck heading west. This accident killed the driver of the truck, Carolyn Veach and passenger James King III.
