Social Security Nixes Program Focused On Collecting Old Debts

The Social Security Administration is halting the implementation of a program that in effect seizes tax refunds from over a thousand people to earn back Social Security overpayments that occurred decades ago.

Acting Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin said on Monday, April 14 that she introduced an order that would immediately halt the program as the agency is conducting a review of all its programs to determine which would benefit Social Security recipients more.

The review comes upon the complaint of some Social Security recipients and members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives that sometimes it is the children whose parents received the overpayments who are being made to pay for the extra money that their elders acquired decades ago.

Democratic Senators Barbara Boxer (California) and Barbara Mikulski (Maryland) decried the practice, saying that even though “it might be allowed under the law, it is entirely unjust”.
