Cotton Outlines Amendments To The Social Security Disability Program

United States Senator Thomas Bryant Cotton (Republican of Arkansas), who is best known for his opinions on foreign policy legislation, wants to propose major changes to current Social Security’s disability programs.

Speaking at a forum conducted by Washington D.C.-based conservative think tank American Heritage last Monday, November 9, Cotton outlined his plan to craft legislation that would effectively reduce the number of Social Security disability beneficiaries.

In opposition to Cotton’s stand on rampant abuse of Social Security programs are findings revealed in a paper written by Paul O’Leary, Elisa Walker, and Emily Roessel of the United States Social Security Administration Office of Retirement and Disability Policy. The paper, entitled Social Security Disability Insurance at Age 60: Does It Still Reflect Congress’ Original Intent?, was released in September of this year and showed evidence that the program was generally not abused.
