Mandatory Background Checks For SS Recipients Obtaining Guns

There is a new rule being enforced by the Social Security Administration saying Social Security disability recipients are now subject to federal background checks for gun purchases. This action is wholly different than banning all Social Security recipients from owning guns in the first place.

Social Security disability recipients who are subject to these mandatory background checks are classified by the SSA as having limited capacity to manage their own affairs due to “marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease.” Also included are those having medical conditions deemed “severe enough to prevent a person from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience.”

The federal background check system began in 1993 with the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which got its name from White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was critically injured during the 1981 assassination attempt against former President Ronald Reagan.
