Social Security Acting Commissioner Resigns Over Corruption Allegation

Social Security Administration acting commissioner Carolyn Colvin has relinquished her post; employees welcomed the development, with one employee in the SSA’s Office of Disability Adjudication or Review (ODAR) division, saying, “I’m ecstatic about it.”

Colvin made the decision known to her employees during the second week of January: she will be stepping down when President Barack Obama leaves office on Friday, January 20.

Since assuming the acting commissioner post in 2013, Senate Republicans have been blocking her appointment due to the unclear nature of her nomination.

In 2013, the same year that Colvin took over the SSA, the Government Accountability Office estimated that around 36,000 people were subjected to $1.3 billion in erroneous payments over two years.
