House Republicans ensure 2016 disability program debate

 In Social Security Disability

Disability funds are predicted to run out in 2016, and a Republican Congress just approved rules that would prevent the transfer of funds from the retirement program without serious overhaul to the disability program as a whole, according to an Associated Press article.

If funds do run out for the disability program by 2016, 11 million people in the U.S. could be affected to their detriment. This move ensures that the disability program will be a major point of debate in the coming years.

New York Rep. Thomas Reed II, one of the proponents of the transfer prevention, said that depleting the retirement fund to benefit disability was a short-term solution that would not solve inherent problems with the program and its funding.
