Nursing Home Abuse Attorney in San Antonio
Trusted Representation for Over 22 Years
Making the choice to place an elderly loved one in the care of a nursing home is difficult enough; you shouldn’t have to also worry about the quality of care your loved one will receive. Unfortunately, not all nursing homes provide residents with the level of care and respect they should. Whether due to understaffing, poor training, or outright malpractice, nursing home negligence and abuse are far too common.
At the Chris Mayo Law Firm, we believe that negligent nursing home facilities and staff should be held accountable when their careless and wrongful actions cause harm. We represent elderly individuals—as well as their family members and loved ones—who have suffered slip and fall accidents, physical injuries, emotional abuse, and other forms of nursing home abuse. While we cannot undo what you have been through, we can aggressively pursue the justice and recovery you deserve, allowing you to move forward with your life.

Examples of Nursing Home Abuse
Nursing home abuse and neglect can take many forms. Examples typically fall in one of three categories: physical abuse, emotional abuse, and financial abuse (also known as theft or fraud). For example, if a nursing home resident slips and falls on an unmarked wet floor, breaking her hip and requiring hospitalization as a result, she is the victim of nursing home negligence. If a nursing home staff member obtains access to a resident’s bank accounts through deceit and then proceeds to withdraw funds from those accounts, the resident is a victim of nursing home abuse.
Signs of Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect
As the family member or loved one of a nursing home resident, it is important that you know the signs of nursing home abuse and/or neglect. In many cases, residents are not able or not willing to speak up for themselves when something is going on. They may not even be aware that what they are experiencing is a form of abuse. Because of this, it is crucial that you are aware of the signs so that you can speak up for your loved one at the first indication that something is wrong.
Some of the common signs of nursing home abuse and neglect include:
- Broken bones
- Cuts or lacerations
- Frequent and/or repeated bruising
- Soiled sheets/bedding
- Poor hygiene
- Over- or under-medication
- Sudden changes in mood/behavior
- Apparent fear in the presence of nursing home staff
- Signs of anxiety and/or depression
- Sexual injuries
- Large withdrawals from bank accounts
- Changes to a will or trust
- Unusual charges on a credit card
Note that this list is not exhaustive; if you notice anything else that seems unusual or “off,” bring it up with someone in charge of nursing home staff. If you see outright signs of abuse, including physical injuries, contact the authorities right away.
You’ll also want to take note of the overall conditions of the nursing home facility. Does the facility seem generally clean? Do residents and staff appear happy and pleasant? Is there an adequate number of nurses, assistant nurses, and doctors on staff? These and other signs can indicate the overall quality and safety of a nursing home facility.
