Social Security judges approving disability claims with little review

 In Social Security Disability

Congressional investigators have revealed that nearly 200 administrative judges have been approving Social Security disability benefit claims without proper evaluation, in effect approving billions of dollars in lifetime payments from the money tight program.

One prominent example identified by the House of Representatives oversight committee is Judge Gerald Krafsur of Kingsport, Tennessee, who approved over 99% of his cases from 2005 to 2013. Krafsur’s cases alone will lead to $1.8 billion in benefits. Furthermore, the committee reported that 191 judges approved over 85% of their disability claims cases.

“In essence, these judges rubber-stamped nearly every claimant before them for a lifetime of benefits at taxpayer expense,” the report said.

Judges have apparently been quickly approving claims in an effort to reduce backlogs and processing times.
