Texas pays $1.9M to Sandra Bland’s family in wrongful death lawsuit

 In Wrongful Death

The family of 28-year-old Sandra Bland, whose death in the Waller County Jail in 2015 gained national attention, will receive a $1.9 million settlement from Texas authorities to settle a wrongful death lawsuit they lodged.

Around $1.8 million will come from Waller County Jail while the remaining $100,000 will come from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, welcomed the development, saying, “Hopefully, moving forward, this will stop deaths that are occurring in jails around the country.” Bland was arrested in June of last year after a traffic stop for a minor violation. Authorities ruled her death in jail three days later as a suicide. Changes to the jail’s protocol to prevent future incidents from occurring are part of the settlement Bland’s family received.
