Toyota Motor Corp. begins settlement negotiations

After a four year legal battle, Toyota Motor Corp. is settling with plaintiffs that sustained injuries from defective Toyota vehicles. Toyota spokeswoman, Carly Schaffner confirmed that settlements were underway on Friday, December 13.

Two months ago an Oklahoma jury awarded 3$ million to victims of a 2005 sudden acceleration accident. Two people were involved, the driver sustained injuries and the passenger was killed as a result of the accident.

Until the Oklahoma ruling, Toyota had not lost an unintended acceleration case. The lawsuits against Toyota’s defective vehicles are among the first lawsuits to target the vehicles’ software as the primary cause of automobile defects.
